A mouse pad, yes. A desk mat seemed like one of those things people bought to make their home office look better in photographs.

Then I thought about how much punishment one small part of a desk receives. Your keyboard sits there all day. The mouse moves over the same spot thousands of times. Coffee gets spilt. Pens leak. A laptop gets dragged backwards and forwards.

Perhaps a leather desk mat isn’t such a silly idea after all.

A Full-Grain Leather Desk Pad for Your Workspace

This desk pad is made from genuine Full-grain vegetable-tanned cow leather.

Full-grain leather retains the natural outer surface of the hide. Small variations in colour, grain and markings haven’t been covered up. They are part of what gives the leather its character.

Use will change it as well.

The spot beneath your wrist may darken. A small scratch can appear and gradually blend into the surface. Over time, the full-grain leather desk mat develops a patina that belongs to your desk and nobody else’s.

That won’t appeal to everyone. If you want something that remains perfectly uniform, a synthetic pad may be a better choice. If you like leather that changes with use, you’ll understand the appeal.

Custom Desk Pad With a Finished Edge

We rejected several otherwise decent leather desk mats because of their raw edges.

They may have been durable, but to me they looked unfinished. A bit like somebody had cut a rectangle from a hide and decided that was close enough.

Our desk mat has a [stitched/burnished] edge. The finished edge gives it a cleaner shape and makes the entire pad look more substantial.

It is one of those details you might not notice immediately. You would notice if it wasn’t there.

A quality desk mat needs more than a piece of leather and a nice photograph.

The leather should be thick enough to protect the desktop without feeling bulky beneath your wrist. The surface needs to remain smooth under a mouse, while the finished edge should hold its shape through everyday use.

We also wanted a durable full-grain leather desk pad that would develop character rather than peel like a synthetic desk protector. Good leather may show scratches and marks, but that is very different from a plastic coating separating from the material underneath.

The final details come down to the hide, thickness, edge finish and craftsmanship. Those are the things that make a premium leather desk mat feel worth keeping.

We add your name or initials to the lower corner of the leather desk pad.

The personalisation is large enough to see but not so large that it takes over your entire desk setup. Gold foil works particularly well against brown, coffee and black leather.

The mat may arrive rolled for protection. After unpacking it, place it on a flat desktop and give the leather a little time to settle.

Looking After Your Full-Grain Leather Desk Pad

There is no complicated care routine.

Wipe dust away with a soft cloth and clean spills reasonably quickly. Don’t attack the surface with alcohol wipes or whatever spray happens to be under the kitchen sink.

Strong cleaners can dry the hide or leave a permanent mark.

Keep the desk pad away from prolonged direct sunlight where possible. Sunshine and regular handling will naturally change the leather colour over time.
